From: Lincoln KS Vienna Rose Martin, 92, of Lincoln and formerly of Colby, died Monday, September 16, 2013. She was born in Ness City, KS, on October 11, 1920, to Edmund Winter and Ollie May (Cook) Fitzgerald. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, all of her siblings, 1 grandchild, and 1 great-grandchild. Survivors include: son Patrick L. Martin, of Schoenchen, KS; daughters Pastor Kaye (Jeff) Metzler of Lincoln, KS and Judy (Chris) Stephens of Manhattan, KS; 13 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. Vienna, a member of the Greatest Generation, was born during the roaring twenties and grew to adulthood during depression years and Dirty Thirties of our nation. Her early years were spent with her nose in a book, seated on the clothes line post happily crocheting, and caring for her 4 younger brothers. Highly organized, Vienna was the keeper of family records and enjoyed researching her family's geneology. She took great pride in being of direct decent of the early colonies and the rich military history of her family. As a registered nurse, Vienna witnessed the arrival of Penicillin, Rhogam, the iron lung, and the Polio Vaccine, to name just a few of the medical world's advances during her 50 years of nursing. Many were the children who arrived into this world assisted by her delivery room skills before her retirement in 1991. An avid and passionate gardener, she found great joy in growing a garden almost every year of her life. The flowers and rose bushes that bloomed around her Colby home were nurtured by her green thumb. There was nothing her creative hand could not master, from sewing to needlework. A very humble, selfless person, Vienna treasured her family, loved keeping in touch with all of them by e-mail, and was always open to new learning and new technology. A graveside service will be held 11:00 a.m. Saturday, September 21, at Beulah Cemetery in Colby, KS. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials to the community garden of Lincoln and the nursing department of Colby Community College in care of Post Rock Funeral Services, 111 E. Elm Street, Lincoln, KS. The register book will be available Tuesday-Thursday for signing at Hall Funeral Home. » View what others have shared. »
