Elsie was born in the Barnard area in 1909. Her Papa passed away when she was 8 years old, and her mother raised 3 children working in a creamery. She married Milo Rathbun when she was 16 and became a farm wife, later moving to Lincoln. They were married 48 years and raised 4 girls: Ardis, Lois, Eula, & Debbie. She was a hard worker and worked various jobs, but is best remembered for running the Ice Cream Parlor. Lots of people remember the single dip 5 cent and double dip 10 cent cones, and if a child came in who did not have a nickel, she would give them a cone anyway. Her hobbies included gardening, fishing, crocheting, and she liked to dance, especially to polka music. She was a great cook, and there was always a chocolate layer cake on the buffet. She loved God, family, and life itself, and went to rest at the age of 101 years, 309 days. She was preceded in death by her parents and husband; two brothers, Floyd and Oliver; a daughter, Eula Mae Howell; and a grandson, Jeff Howell. Visitation will also be at the Hall Chapel on Tuesday, 3 May, from 1 to 7 PM. Her funeral will be at the Hall Chapel, Lincoln, at 10 AM, Wednesday, 4 May.
