Elmer (Bill) Wiebke

Elmer L. (Bill) Wiebke, 95, Lincoln, died September 30, 2015 in Lincoln. He was born to Charles and Zella (Grantham) Wiebke in Kansas City KS on April 2, 1920. They moved to Lincoln County a few years later. He grew up on the farm and after WWII service returned to farming in Lincoln County for the rest of his life. He entered the US Navy in January 1942 and was assigned to the Light Cruiser USS Cleveland. He participated in the North Africa invasion in November 1942 and then the vessel sailed to the South Pacific where it operated until the war ended. Curiously, when the ship crossed the international date line, the timing was such that the first of January did not occur for the crew. After the war ended the ship transited through Hawaii to San Diego. He was then sent to Norman OK for his discharge. He is survived by his wife of sixty-nine years, Goldie; his daughter Carol (Larry) Courtney of Basehor KS; son Don (Jeanne Ann) of Lincoln; and sister Juanita Pryor of Littleton CO. He is also survived by five grandchildren: Dr. Gary Courtney, Shannon Wiebke, Kelli Shelton, Lacie Faison, and Keven Courtney, and nine great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, daughter Judy Ann Wiebke, brother Leonard, and sisters Eula Taylor and Virginia Sacks. Goldie and Bill were faithful members of the Lincoln United Methodist Church. After retirement, Bill and Goldie traveled extensively. One of their many lifetime enjoyments was dancing at the Jolly Mixers and square-dancing; they spent many happy years on the dance floor. Visitation will be Friday from 1 to 7 PM at Hall Chapel with the family present from 5 to 7. Funeral services will be Saturday, October 3, at 11:00 AM at Hall Chapel with interment to follow in the Lincoln Cemetery.
